On Freedom
Freedom is multi-faceted.
Freedom of choice.
Freedom to love.
Freedom of religion.
Freedom of speech.
Freedom of views.
What IS freedom?
Perhaps freedom is an escape. An escape from authority. From being told what’s right and what’s wrong.
Freedom might simply be the act of choosing. Making the personal decision of whom to love, where to live, what to wear, who or if to worship.
Is freedom the opportunity and, dare I say, RIGHT, to be your own person?
Maybe freedom is our defining characteristic as human beings. The opportunity to act rather than just to be acted upon. Wild animals don’t have that, at least to the extent that humans do. Neither do plants, or the other natural minerals and particles of the earth.
When I hear freedom I think of the people who emigrated from other countries, to chase The American Dream. Is that really freedom? Leaving something behind in the pursuit of something better.
Perhaps freedom never has been and never will be a tangible thing. It just might exist in our minds, and maybe that’s the best place for it to remain.
Maybe freedom is actually a perception of one’s culture. What they would change about their own culture, if it WAS easy. If it didn’t require blood, sweat, tears, and required us to make choices and change the things in our lives that could change not only one’s personal life, but those around us, and, to some extent, the world.
I guess that freedom has a different definition for everybody.
Love,
D.J. Lathrop
